Hide-Away Source Amplifier: The Alpine HDS-990 includes a hide-away source amplifier that can be installed in the console, behind the dash, under the seat, or in another hidden area for flexible installation and mounting options. Mounting hardware (including brackets and screws) are included to secure the hide-away source amplifier. All of the Alpine HDS-990's inputs and outputs are located on the hide-away source amplifier. The built-in amplifier is rated at 25 watts (RMS / 50 watts (Peak) x 4 channels to power a pair of 4-ohm speaker.

Note: The hide-away source unit is not designed to mount in a standard single-DIN (2") or double-DIN (4") dash opening.
Wired Remote Commander: The hide-away source amplifier is controlled by a wired remote commander and connects via its attached 19" cable and 8' proprietary 4-pin extension cable. The wired remote commander features six push-button controls (blue backlight), a 3-way rotary knob, and a full-color display. The six push-buttons operate Power, Source, Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, Mute and other functions.. The 3-way rotary knob controls volume, as well as allows you to access audio and menu settings. The full-color display indicates track number and playback time, as well as supports song/artist/album information and album art. The wired remote commander can be mounted to your vehicle's dash or console using the included mounting bracket with screws or two-sided tape.

Note: The wired remote commander has an IR sensor for adding a wireless remote control (sold separately and not available yet - no ETA).
Illumination Dimmer: You can manually adjust the brightness of the full color display's backlight from Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3. You can also have the wired remote commander's display dim and brighten automatically with your vehicle's head lights. When your vehicle's headlights are turned off, the display brightens. When the headlights are turned on, the display dims. You must connect the illumination wire of the included harness to your vehicle's headlamp circuit.
Built-In Steering Wheel Control: The hide-away source amplifier offers built-in steering wheel control compatibility, allowing you to keep the factory steering wheel audio controls (such as Source, Play/Pause, Volume Up/Down, Previous/Next Track, and Mute) in some vehicles.
Note: The green and white wires of the SWC harness are connected to the button line of the vehicle's steering wheel, while the black wire is connected to the ground.
Amplifier & Audio Section
25W x 4Ch Amplifier: The Alpine HDS-990 features a 25 watt (RMS) / 50 watt (Peak) x 4 channel amplifier that can power up to two pair of 4-ohm speakers in your vehicle. Choose one of Alpine's Status Series coaxial speakers (HD-Z65) or Status Series component speakers (HDZ-65C / HDZ-65CS / HDZ-653 / HDZ-653S), as well as other brand and model of speakers (all sold separately).
Note: If you plan on connecting external power amplifiers to the unit's preamp outputs and not using the built-in amplifier, you can turn the built-in amplifier off.
6Ch/4V Preouts: The Alpine HDS-990 is outfitted with three sets of 4-Volt RCA pre-outs (Front/Rear/Sub) for connection of external amplifiers. Choose one of Alpine's Status Series 4-channel (HDA-F60), 5-channel (HDA-V90) or mono (HDA-M80) amplifiers; or other brand and model of amplifier (all sold separately). The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded (front/rear), while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The subwoofer output level can be adjusted independently from the main volume setting (0-15); so even at low volume settings the subwoofer is still audible. The subwoofer output phase can be set to Normal (0°) or Reverse (180°).
Optical & Coaxial Digital Outputs: The Alpine HDS-990 is equipped with an optical (Toslink) and coaxial (S/PDIF) output to connect Alpine's HDP-D90 Digital Sound Processor Amplifier (sold separately). When paired with the Hi-Res processing power of the HDP-D90, you'll experience the highest level of Hi-Res audio playback in your vehicle with the addition of a 31-Band parametric or graphic EQ and a 3-way crossover network. In addition to the optical and coaxial output, the HDS-990 comes with a 16' system cable that connects between the unit's proprietary 4-pin system connector and the Ethernet (RJ45) jack on the HDP-D90 DSP amplifier for control of the DSP amplifier from the HDS-990's wired remote commander.
Note: You'll only use the optical or coaxial digital output to connect the Alpine HDP-D90 DSP amplifier (not both).
32-Bit/192kHz DAC: The Alpine HDS-990 employs a 32-bit/192kHz DAC for playback of Hi-Res music files via USB (including FLAC & DSD) and Hi-Res audio codecs from Bluetooth (including aptX HD & LDAC).
Equalizer: The Alpine HDS-990 offers simple Bass & Treble, 10 EQ Presets, and a 10-Band EQ to tailor the receiver's sound to your preference, application, and content.
- 10 EQ Presets: You can simply choose between 10 EQ Presets - including Flat, Pop, Rock, News, Jazz, Electronic, Hip Hop, Easy Listening, Country, and Classical.
- 10-Band Parametric EQ: You can fine-tune the unit's sound using its 10-band parametric EQ. Band 1 (20-63Hz), Band 2 (31Hz-125Hz), Band 3 (63Hz-315Hz), Band 4 (125Hz-500Hz) Band 5 (250Hz-1kHz), Band 6 (500Hz-2kHz), Band 7 (1kHz-4kHz), Band 8 (2kHz-7.2kHz), Band 9 (5.8kHz-12kHz), Band 10 (9kHz-20kHz). You can adjust the Gain (-12 to +12dB) and Q-Value (0.404-28.85) of each band.
- Bass & Treble: In addition to the EQ Presets and 13-Band EQ, the receiver offers simple Bass & Treble control, along with balance and fader adjustment.
Note: A 31-band parametric or graphic EQ is available when connecting the Alpine HDP-D90 Digital Sound Processor Amplifier (sold separately).
X-Over: You can choose between a 2-way or 3-way crossover setup based on your vehicle's speaker setup and configuration. These high pass, mid pass, and low pass crossovers limit the frequencies delivered to the unit's speaker and preamp outputs. Each speaker channel is controlled independently, so each speaker pair can be driven by the frequencies for which have they been optimally designed. The crossover adjusts the HFP (high pass filter), MPF (mid pass filter), or LPF (low pass filter) frequency point of each speaker pair, and also the slope (how fast the filter rolls off the highs or lows).
- 2-Way Mode: The 2-Way setting allows you to set a high pass crossover for the unit's front and rear speaker outputs and preouts, as well as a low pass crossover the unit's subwoofer preamp output. You can set the unit's high and low pass filter center frequency point to 20, 25, 32, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, or 200Hz. The slope of the high pass and low pass filters can also be set to 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, or 48 dB/oct.
- 3-Way Mode: The 3-Way setting allows you to set a high pass crossover for your tweeters, and mid pass crossover for your midrange drivers, and a low pass crossover for your bass woofer. The tweeter's high pass crossover can be set to 1, 1.2, 1.6, 2, 2.5, 3.2, 4, 5, 6.3, 8, 10, 12.5, 16, or 20k. The midrange's mid pass crossover can be set to 20, 25, 32, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200, 250, 315, 400, 500, 630, 800, 1k, 1.2k, 1.6k, 2k, 2.5k, 3.2k, 4k, 5k, 6.3k, 8k, 10k, 12.5k, 16k, or 20k Hz. The bass woofer's low pass filter can be set to 20, 25, 32, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200, 250, 315, 400, 500, 630, or 800 Hz. The slope of the high pass, mid pass, and low pass filters can also be set to 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, or 48 dB/oct.
Note: The 3-way crossover mode is only available when using Alpine's HDP-D90 Digital Sound Processor Amplifier ( sold separately).
Digital Time Correction: This unit is able to delay the audio signal to the speakers closest to the listener with its Digital Time Correction feature. This effectively creates a perception of increased distance for those speakers. Time Correction allows the listener to be placed at an equal distance between the left & right front speakers, left & right rear speakers, and left & right subwoofers for optimum staging. You can adjust the distance (0 to 346cm/136") or time delay (0.000 to 10.000msec) of each speaker and subwoofer to the listener.
Input Source Volume: You can adjust the input source volume for each of the HDS-990's source inputs - including USB, Bluetooth, Aux, and High-Level. Each source's input volume can be set to -60DB to 0dB.
Bluetooth, USB, & Aux
Bluetooth Audio Streaming: The Alpine HDS-990 is equipped with built-in Bluetooth 5.0 with support for wireless audio music streaming (A2DP) and control (AVRCP). You'll be able to stream stored music, music apps, and other audio content from your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or tablet to the HDS-990. You'll also be able to control playback functions such as Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track from the wired remote commander (advanced music navigation will still need to be done from the Bluetooth source device). The unit will also display your Bluetooth music's song information, such as Artist name & Song/Album title (no Album Art). The HDS-990 supports a variety of Bluetooth audio codecs -
- SBC: The SBC (Sub-Band Coding) is Bluetooth's standard audio codec that is universally compatible with all Bluetooth-enable devices. SBC supports up to 320kbps.
- AAC: AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is a step-up from Bluetooth's standard SBC codec and is Apple's standard audio code. AAC supports up to 250kbps.
- aptX HD: The HDS-990 also supports the higher resolution aptX HD for 24-bit/48kHz wireless audio. If your Bluetooth source device (such as Android) utilizes aptX HD then that resolution will be utilized automatically. *Currently Apple iOS devices do not support aptX HD.

LDAC: LDAC is a newer wireless audio codec from Sony that allows you to enjoy high quality wireless audio via Bluetooth.
With 3x the data transmitted, LDAC provides an enhanced wireless listening experience up 24-bit/95kHz (900 kbps). Many newer Android smartphones support LDAC.
Notes:
- You can pair multiple devices to the unit, but only one source device can be connected and used for playback at a time.
- This unit does not support Bluetooth hands-free communication (HFP) for making or answering phone calls.
3 USB-A 2.0 Ports: The Alpine HDS-990 is outfitted with a 3 USB-A 2.0 ports; one on front of the hide-away source amplifier and one on the rear of the hide-away source amplifier. A 58" USB extension cable is included for one of the rear USB ports. Each USB-A 2.0 port supports connection and audio playback of a USB MSC (mass storage class) device, such as a USB thumbdrive (up to 2TB). It supports both compressed and Hi-Res music files. You can search your USB device's stored music files/folders by category and alphabetically. You'll also be able to control playback functions such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, and Random/Repeat. In addition, the unit will display song/artist/album information (including album art). The USB ports (5V/1.5A) can also be used to charge your smartphone or other electronic device.

Notes:
- When three USB thumbdrives are connected at the same time, the unit will automatically combine the contents of all three USB devices and all three USB devices become one source.
- Do not charge more than one electronic device at a time via USB. Charging more than one device at a time may cause the unit to malfunction.
- The USB-A 2.0 ports do not support media playback from an Apple iOS or Android OS device, USB hubs and card-readers, or laptops and computers.
- There is also a male USB-A connector on the rear of the unit that is designed for future use.
Aux Input: The Alpine HDS-990 features a stereo minijack (3.5mm) Aux input for connect an external audio device for playback.
4Ch Hi-Level Input: The 4-channel Hi-Level input allows you to integrate your vehicle's factory radio sources (including AM/FM tuner, CD player, and other factory sources) into the Alpine HDS-990, so they can be played back through the HDS-990's built-in amplifier and/or connected external amplifier(s).
Note: You'll still control playback functions of the factory radio sources through the factory radio (not the HDS-990).
No Disc Playback: The Alpine HDS-990 is not equipped with a CD player or other disc player.
No AM/FM Tuner: The Alpine HDS-990 is not equipped with a built-in AM/FM tuner and does not support SiriusXM.
